The students surveyed 157 people in the Meadows of Dan area and asked them the question,

"Do you think the Dan River is polluted in your community?"

The majority responded no. 57% of the total number surveyed said no. 43% responded yes.

Of the 157 people responding, 81 were female (40 females believed that the Dan River was polluted and 41 females believed that it was not.) Of the 157 responding, 76 were male. (28 males believed that the Dan was polluted and 48 males believed that it was not.)

Of those believing that the Dan River was polluted, the sources of pollution believed to be in the communities included mud, silt, cans, bottles, litter, farm & garden runoff, fertilizer & farm chemical runoff.
The ages of people surveyed were as follows:

age 20-30 = 18

ages 31-40 = 19

ages 41-50 = 11

ages 51-60 = 8

ages 61-70 = 6

ages 71-80 = 1

ages 81-90 = 1

Although this survey reveals public opinion regarding the state of pollution in the local stretch of the river, it does not tell us whether or not the river actually is polluted. The river itself must be tested to determine this.
