The students and teachers concluded that the Dan River begins a pristine headwaters that is free of pollution. As the Dan meanders its way into the Piedmonts of NC and VA, it increases in size and picks up a growing burden of silt. It becomes the Muddy Dan with levels of pollution increasing along the course of the river.
The Dan River becomes a tributary of the Roanoke River at South Boston; its sediment load is dispersed at Buggs Island Lake forming a delta. The waters of the Dan (now called the Roanoke River) travel to the Albemarle Sound, NC and ultimately to the Atlantic Ocean.
